Log Buffer #258, A Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

Posted in: Technical Track

Database blogging is more than about announcing that your last night’s backup was successful. While that’s extremely important to keep track of, the database world across Oracle, MySQL, and SQL Server technologies has grown way beyond. This Log Buffer Edition also extends beyond and more in this Log Buffer #258.

Oracle:

Laimis has produced a list containing Oracle 11gR2 new AWR views and columns as compared to 10gR2.

From time to time a request for a query to “show the current SQL” for each session appears on the internet. Jonathan answers.

One of the things that sounded kinda neat in SQL Developer 3.1 was the Data Pump Wizards, so Tim thought that he would have a play with them.

Richard Foote‘s two week holiday’s produce a gem of a blog post.

Charles Hooper explains a Doc Bug.

SQL Server:

To Michael Swart, it seems that the Microsoft has always provided example databases in order to illustrate database concepts.

Pinal Dave offers a SQL brain teaser, a quick puzzle on Join and Null.

Jen McCown has written a post to anyone with SQL Server on his or her resume.

Mike Hillwig is going with more interview questions.

One of the strengths of MDX is the fact that calculated measures in MDX are not strongly typed: they return variants.  Chris Webb has more.

MySQL:

Chris Calender directs us towards a good MySQL troubleshooting book.

Gavin Towey blogs about Filesorts, Secondary Indexes and the Importance of Covering Indexes.

Dave Stokes struck a chord when a gentleman asked how to not only partition data but also store the indexes on other disks as a way of reducing I/O contention on drives.

Andrew Martin came across a dev VM running MySQL 5.0.77 (an old release, 28 January 2009) that didn’t have InnoDB available. skip-innodb wasn’t set, SHOW VARIABLES LIKE ‘%innodb%’ looked as expected, but with one exception: the value of have-innodb was DISABLED.

About the Author

I have been in love with Oracle blogging since 2007. This blogging, coupled with extensive participation in Oracle forums, plus Oracle related speaking engagements, various Oracle certifications, teaching, and working in the trenches with Oracle technologies has enabled me to receive the Oracle ACE award. I was the first ever Pakistani to get that award. From Oracle Open World SF to Foresight 20:20 Perth. I have been expressing my love for Exadata. For the last few years, I am loving the data at Pythian, and proudly writing their log buffer carnivals.
