Getting to Know Sydney

Going stir-crazy from sitting in with all the rain, I was looking for something to do. Paul (from the Pythian Group Australia office) suggested either shopping in Chatswood or going to Crows Nest. Crows Nest is a lovely area of town with lots and lots of shops and restaurants. They have a natural food store that serves organic coffee. Have I mentioned how big coffee is in Australia? You have to go to McDonald’s to get regular drip coffee like I am used to from Tim Horton’s. A few other things I have noticed since arriving here.

Post AUSOUG – Day 2

I decided to do Rottsnest Island after all. I stood beside the captain on the cruise over there, so I could both see on both sides of the ship AND hear his “little bit of commentary”. I “hired a bike” once I got to Rottsnest as the island is really too big to do by foot. Decided I would head to one of the stops and have lunch. It was quite hilly. By the time I got to the look-out, I was too hot and exhausted to eat!! Three hours of biking and my legs were like rubber!

AUSOUG – Post-Perth Sightseeing!

Man you can tell I’m a geek when my first inclination is to title this “Site Seeing”!When I left Ottawa it was snowing. Today was my first “off” day where I could spend time dong the tourist thing. I was going to go to Rottsnest Island, but did not get up and get going early enough. Instead I took the “Blue CATS” to “Woolys”. “Woolys” is the nickname for Woolworths, where you get groceries for the same price as in the suburbs. They also have a liquor store in them, so you can get all your essentials at one place. About 10 minutes from the Pier is the Perth Zoo, where I spent the day. I’m not sure what I will be doing tomorrow . . . because at this point, my feet are “knackered.”

AUSOUG: Getting There is Half the Fun… NOT!

For some reason, the advertising slogan, “Getting there is half the fun,” keeps going through my mind. Well, I certainly would not describe my trip to Perth, Australia as “fun”. I’m pretty tired. And, I’m presenting at the AUSOUG National Conference Series 2007 at 10:30 tomorrow morning.

Looks like oracle-wtf has been hijacked

I am sad to report that my RSS feed for oracle-wtf definitely made me say WTF! but not in a good way. Actually visiting the site confirmed my suspicion, it’s been hi-jacked by a splogger.

Working as an Onsite DBA Together with Pythian

I was reading a couple of items on gapingvoid which inspired me to use our blog for a conversation with our customers (and with potential Pythian DBAs) about what it’s like to work with Pythian. What exactly does an on-site DBA get from working with Pythian Remote DBAs? Find out here.

Tips for the New DBA

Pythian has been a rapidly expanding company over the ten months I’ve been here. About a dozen new employees have come on during that time, making the total 40. I have a few observations on habits and qualities new DBAs can bring to their jobs.

The Dirty Dozen

Here’s the challenge. How do I post to both work and personal blogs and provide appropriate material for both? It’s not a problem I expected to face because most employers, at least where I’m from, wouldn’t entertain the idea of employees blogging on company time to the company blog, far less encourage it. Which is one of several reasons that I found myself choosing to work with Pythian.
