Tuesday morning at OOW is always occupied by this forum, an opportunity for authors and other persons to receive heads up on what’s coming down the pipe from Oracle. The following notes are musings from yours truly as I attended the forum today.

Yesterday night, under the backdrop of the magnificent Golden Gate bridge of San Fransisco, Oracle lived up to its name and honored the Oracle ACEs and ACE Directors from all across the world. Lillian and her team did a wonderful job of bringing together almost all the great names in the Oracle World, and it was really nice for me to put so many names to the faces.

The day was action packed with sessions and I presented my Oracle rman:Don’t Forget the Basics to an enthusiastic crowd in Moscone west. The room was close to full with some hanging out at the back. It has been a while since I have presented in a room so close to being full. There was a handful of questions and comments during the session and a group of attendees approached me to follow-up afterwards.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has announced a new, smaller member to the Exadata X3 H2M2 family: the eighth rack. It’s targeted at environments that are too small for a quarter rack. Here are my thoughts.

Tonight at Oracle OpenWorld, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison announced the latest Exadata release: X3. It sports a hardware refresh including a big expansion in RAM and flash storage capacity: 4TB and 22TB respectively on a full rack. Read my thoughts on this here.

I can only comment so much on technology announcements. However, as the maestro Pythian’s team of 18 at the show this year, I can comment on how to get the most out of your OOW participation & experience.

Along comes the Oracle RAC Special Interest Group (SIG) which is appearing at a conference near you. At Oracle Open World 2012, RAC SIG personnel will be on-hand running RAC Attack – a hands-on lab where you can build a cluster on your Windows, MAC, or Linux personal computer. This is a dream come true. I first did RAC Attack at the UKOUG show in Birmingham last December. I am not anywhere close to being a RAC expert but I have rolled my sleeves up and got into the technology. Do not miss this opportunity at Oracle Open World next week in San Francisco

Every time I have had the pleasure of attending Oracle Open World, I have discovered a plethora of technical heavy-weights from all over the world in attendance. I enjoy meeting and shmoozing with these people almost as much as absorbing the technical content of the show itself. Many of my Pythian colleagues are presenting at OOW12 and thereby making this fine company AND themselves more renowned in the Oracle tech arena:

There’s a known bug, 7306820 “ORA-7445 [krhahw] / ORA-27090 during file header read. Instances may crash, but this bug is fixed in 11.2.0.1, and this database is running 11.2.0.3. And on top of that, it’s an Exadata system, so I/O to storage servers goes over the InfiniBand network rather than using async I/O (AIO) calls.

Pythian was at Insync12 in Melbourne and your’s truly presented two sessions on Exadata, one dealt with the overview of the machine while answering the justification of the beast, and the other tried to demystify the working of DBRM with the IORM within Exadata. It was a great two days of technical fun was packed with nifty tricks, cool tips, strengthening of knowledge and sharing of it in an exquisite way.
