The San Francisco Chronicle has chosen Oracle’s Larry Ellison as CEO of the year. Although the Justice Department challenged the Oracle/PeopleSoft merger, Ellison moved doggedly forward, taking the case to federal court and sweetening the bid. Other Bay Area CEOs fared much better in the numbers game, but the Chronicle chose Ellison because of his ability to create a long-term strategy for his company to prevail in a competitive market—and pursue it with determination.
According to Analyst Tad Piper of Piper Jaffray & Co., “Larry Ellison is a technology visionary and someone who has taken a long-term perspective.” Other analysts remain skeptical, saying that we won’t know for years whether Ellison’s aggressive strategy really works.
